Signage says it all doesn't it?
Or maybe not quite, so I guess I should type some more. It's always easy to assume that French restaurants are fine dining, pretentious and expensive. But lo and behold, this is not always the case! (Although I am over exaggerating a bit, there are plenty lovely friendly French restaurants I've been to in Melbourne!)
As I have reviewed sometime ago, Roule Galette do a great little thing called galettes, or more people are probably familiar with crepes. Galettes are just the savoury buckwheat version of crepes.
David and I had a friend down from Sydney, who wanted to become 'cultured' and try something different. Since we were in town on a Friday night and I've always wanted to take Brad to Le Triskel (and just enjoy the French accent of the owner), it was perfect timing, since they only open for lunch Monday to Fridays otherwise. Friday night is their only night open!
Brad and I arrived early and took a seat outside, as it was cool and breezy. It was quite romantic, with the little white lanterns, dark wood and soft diffused evening light.
The interior is also very cute, quite cramped, but very cosy, with bit and pieces scattered around the place, I in particular loved the word magnets that littered about on the coffee machine, I was tempted to play around with it but the boys were eager to move on to get drinks elsewhere after we paid and I only just managed to get a quick snap in!
Since we arrived there early, we both tucked into our usual combination of a latte and chai latte, because I was absolutely starving. At 6pm. No idea what I had been doing that day! I thought the little design on my chai latte was just charming, a stencil I'm assuming? Oh and it was delicious.
As we were finishing up our coffees, David and our very sweet friend Jason showed up and it was time to bust out some alcohol. We got a bottle of the pear cider to share, all these little French places always seem to have the most adorable cups, we all got a different one. Jason ended up with a yellow one which had me quietly jealous (it's my favourite colour!). It was light and refreshing, fairly dry and not too sweet at all.
I can't remember exactly what everybody had, but I'm pretty sure I had either the La Broceliandre (French Bechamel, Swiss Gruyere Cheese, Mushrooms with the option of either ham or Prosciutto or turkey. I went with the Prosciutto). Although I was tempted by the La Korigan, mainly because it sounds like Krogan, which is one of my favourite alien species in the videogame Mass Effect...well you've got to have a tie breaker right?! I absolutely adore having cheese in my galettes, it's one of those things that I deem vital. And this was no different, the galette really was exceptional, the cheeses just rich, melty goodness, making the galette soft and well...cheesy. The prosciutto added a nice saltiness to, really making it a nice savory dish. J'adore.
The rest of the boys went for more substantial options with eggs. I've actually personally never tried a galette with egg, but I suppose I will have to eventually! I loved the presentation, a package with the egg yolk just peeking out waiting to be burst with a knife....the boys absolutely loved what they had, demolishing it fairly quickly.
The galettes also came with a lovely fresh green salad, simple, but definitely what was needed amongst all the cheese and meat!
Even after downing a galette each, dessert was needed. I regret I forget what this was called, but David and I had it once and insisted that Jason and Brad needed to try it. Essentially? Ice-cream and chocolate sauce wrapped in a lovely, lightly sweet crepe, dotted with berries around the outside. It is an absolute joy to wield knife and fork and cut this open, ice-cream and chocolate sauce oozing out together. This disappeared very, very, very quickly.
We also got the crepe with chocolate sauce, warm raspberry sauce (or puree? can't remember) and ice-cream. Whilst not as aesthetically exciting, it was actually, surprisingly delicious, even after the first dessert, the warmth of the raspberry sauce was a nice contrast to the ice-cream. And then of course, chocolate sauce just makes everything a-okay.
I honestly do find it a pity that Le Triskel is only open for dinners once a week, a friend asked me sometime ago where he should take a girl on a lunch date (assumedly a first date, since he was asking me for suggestions and was eager to please!) and both Roule Galette and Le Triskel popped up in my list of suggestions. He ended up picking Le Triskel and reporting that they both had a lovely time and it's certainly not hard to see why. The galette places in Melbourne are really perfect first date locations, or even later on in the case of Brad and I....

Ooooo lovely pictures! And so many!! I've never ever heard of this place. It's now on my wishlist. :)
ReplyDeleteI MUST GO THERE. MUST. I keep forgetting. T_T
ReplyDeletewow you tried nearly everything on the menu it seems. i prefer Le Triskel over Roule Galette when i was last in melbourne. although still haven't had a chance to blog about them. so little time so much food :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've had crepes since I was 8 years old, so that's... 15 years ago? Eeep! Clearly I need to get myself to France or, at a pinch, Melbourne :P (Particularly for the raspberry and chocolate cause desserts!)
ReplyDeleteI keep forgetting about this place! and I love that pear cider, I think I had it at Movida, yum!
ReplyDeleteThis looks gorgeous! I've never been and keeping meaning to go. I like the arrogant French :)
ReplyDeleteI love galettes. Lived on them when in Paris. And there is nothing like a nutella crepe :) I haven't been to this place! I must go - noted only open for dinner on Friday night (how annoying). You're right, it would be the perfect date place. V cute, a little romantic :)
ReplyDeleteHeidi xo
Bryan - I think you'll really enjoy it, very quaint. ;)
ReplyDeleteMichelle - I do tend to forget about it all the time too! So I always end up at Roule Galette instead. :s
Simon - With three boys eating and me, it's fairly easy to get through a sizeable menu. ;) Le Triskel is certainly more classy, but I do like the homeliness of Roule Galette. :)
Hannah - No crepe joints up in Canberra?! Crepe mission stat!
Catherine - I am so addicted to cider at the moment! It's absolutely going to be my drink of choice aaallll summer! :)
Joyce - I thought that was a cute touch on their half, why deny the stereotypes? ;)
Heidi - I'm popping back to France for a bit in the near year I think, so i definetly am going to get my nose stuck into many more of these....mmm~
I love this place!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos as always :)
