A weekend in Bendigo

Some couples meet their maker when they travel together. For Brad and I though, I think it brings out our best; having to come to know each other’s quirks and preferences, travelling together is something that really adds to our relationship and we thrive on the diversity it brings to the usual day.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0259_zpsszv5ccgy.jpg

Even if it is only a weekend getaway to Bendigo, which was purely planned because I saw that the Art Series Hotels were having a sale through January and thought it might be cute to spend a night up that way. When I told Brad of what I had done, he just looked at me, nodded and continued with what he was doing.

Don’t think I can surprise him anymore.

So here’s a little run down of what we did and what we enjoyed.

36 Wheelers Hill Road, Musk 3461

On our way up to Bendigo, we made a pretty big detour to swing by the sleepy little town of Musk, purely to pop into Istra Smallgoods to buy all of the bacon and sausages. My family had become acquainted with the business when their christmas hams were recommended to us by a friend. Although they had fully sold out the year we wanted to try it, my parents made the drive up anyway, were lucky enough that someone had not picked up their order and came home with leg of ham and all the other delicious bits and pieces.

Seriously, the bacon and Istrian sausages are totally where it’s at, we’ve found the other sausages to be a bit on the salty side for our tastes. We seriously stocked up, and the benefit of buying directly? So cheap. So much bacon.

With our bacon expedition completed, I realised that Daylesford was really close by, so we swung over to grab a sausage roll from one of the local bakeries for lunch (perfectly nice, but nothing to write home about) then stopped into L1, an extension of the existing cafe Larder, but with more of a coffee focus.

With mixed counter seating, communal tables and private tables, with pastries on display, it made for a nice little chilled out spot for an afternoon pick me up. Food menu looked good too from Larder…so perhaps next time!

Lucan Street, Bendigo, 3550

Eventually we finally made it into the quaint little town (it’s not really big enough to be a city is it?) of Bendigo. It’s actually quite a lovely drive coming in, with plenty of wide roads, and some gorgeous old buildings from the hey day gold rush era.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0211_zpsknevbkjk.jpg

The Schaller Studio is located directly next to the Bendigo hospital, and first impressions are good. The lobby is large, open planned, with cafe and reception desk as one, creating a very casual atmosphere. The lobby has plenty of communal spaces to relax, with books, as well as paper and paint to keep you occupied if need be.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0203_zpswmzjv6uk.jpg

Having stayed in The Olsen and The Cullen before, there was a certain standard I had in mind when entering the rooms for The Schaller Studio. The room was light, bright and very modern; everything you would hope for. It was definitely on the smaller side though, and I was a bit disappointed that the ‘One Bedroom Suite’ was simply two identical rooms with the adjoining door open between them, and one bed swapped out for a sofa.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0206_zpsvckw2e3u.jpg

Can’t complain too much really though, the extra space was still nice, as was the extra bathroom!

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0207_zpsjpomslqo.jpg

For those wanting to know, the hotel is pretty conveniently located, but it’s still easier to just grab the car and drive into the heart of the city to get around, rather than walking directly from the hotel.

When planning our little weekend, I had initially wanted to go to Masons of Bendigo for dinner, but soon found out that they were still closed when we were going to be up there, so instead booked for Mr Beebes.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0213_zpskw5fcy4a.jpg

Mr Beebes, is named after Mr Beebes himself, who designed many of Bendigo’s buildings between 1880 and 1910, including the building that the restaurant is located in. It advertises itself as a casual eating spot with a focus on sharing (which means order all the things!)

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0218_zpshllnllu9.jpg

I’m instantly in love with the colour scheme (being a huge sucker for yellow), especially contrasted with some of the older details in the building, like it’s stunning ceilings.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0224_zpsp1xwmhlf.jpg

I’m also in love with their $14 cocktails…which even included the martinis! Couldn’t believe what good value it was…although I opted for a delicious concoction with mint instead (because I’ve learnt that martinis just completely ruin me…as much as I do like them).

The food here, is the type of modern Australian that Brad enjoys. Hearty food with plenty of big flavours.

I ooh and aah over the potato skins with beef tartare and truffle aioli, the potatoes are perfectly cooked, gorgeously tender and creamy, and thoroughly demolish the very generous serving of duck liver parfait with pedro ximenez jelly with brioche which is so smooth and gorgeously rich.

From the ‘small’ plates (which aren’t so small in my opinion actually!) we get the slow braised lamb ribs with smoked paprika, pickles and parsley, that just falls off the bone and a roasted cauliflower salad with smoked tomato puree. The ribs are tender, meaty, juicy; and I adore the crisp onion rings served with it, and the cauliflower makes for a bright partnering, that still compliments it with freshness from the cauliflower and tomato, but a smokiness adding some richness to it.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0250_zpsm1qgrevc.jpg

I’m honestly super full by the time the herbed free range chicken breast with truffled gnocchi, marinated celeriac, peas and sage jus comes out, with the hand cut russet chips and aioli on the side. Perhaps my ordering was a bit too rich and heavy handed…The dish is aromatic and delightful, it’s bright and quite light, the chicken itself juicy and tender.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0254_zps3jmzo6g1.jpg

Potatoes were killing it as well, with the skin so crisp and golden. Yum. Could not stop picking at these!

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0257_zpsb2wsxjwh.jpg

Although I was dying to try dessert, I was just at that point where I was painfully full, so we opted out of dessert and instead went for a wander around Rose park while there was still light, taking in the lovely buildings and greenery before finishing our night back at the Schaller Studio where we took advantage of the cable and watched all the episodes of ‘Are You the One’ on MTV. Terrible show, but terribly addictive!

It was quite interesting to find that the initial cafe we wanted to go to in Bendigo for breakfast was actually closed on Sundays (?!) which is how we found ourselves at Brewhouse Coffee Roasters instead.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0271_zpsyydwahek.jpg

It’s a huge warehouse-like space, dressed up with a bit of urban-industrial flavour. Colourful graffiti walls, mis-matched metal chairs and milk crates for lamp shades. Huge space, that’s very family friendly.

Coming from Melbourne, the breakfast options don’t blow my mind, but they are solid. My grilled saganaki with zucchini, eggplant, pesto, leaves and poached egg is hearty and just so delicious. I mean, it’s all my favourite things really, the saganaki is just delicious, the eggplant is cooked through so it’s lovely and soft and it’s a hearty breakfast. Touch on the salty side, but nothing really to complain about.

 photo bendigo-daylesford-schaller-studio-brewhouse-mr-beebes-0279_zps8oexxkbj.jpg

Brad’s Brewhouse Breakfast with eggs anyway (he got his scrambled), roast tomato, istra sausage, mushrooms, beans and bacon is hearty and tasty. The istra sausages in particular are way tasty.

Bendigo Art Gallery, Bendigo

When we finished breakfast, we wandered over to the museum; I was surprised to find out that entry was purely by donation! How fantastic is that?

It’s a modest museum, but with some great little exhibitions and great collection of old and new art from Australia and around the world. Great spot to have a wander, especially on a hot day!

Australian Grand Dairy Awards 2016

Disclosure: I was invited as a guest to the Australian Grand Dairy Award evening

Why hi there, would you like to eat all of Australia’s award winning dairy products and meet the people who make these lovely products?

Well obviously, you say yes; who doesn’t want to have cheese for dinner?

 photo australian-grand-dairy-awards-0673_zps4w7nqhbc.jpg

The Australian Grand Dairy Awards is as the name suggests, is the award for some of the best cheese, yoghurts, spreads and ice-creams around the country. It started in 1999, and has now reached it's 16th year. It’s quite a process to be awarded one of these grand awards, as in order to enter the competition, the product must have won gold in it’s category in a state competition first (or something along the lines), so it’s really the cream of the crop that gets picked. That, and around 300 products are tasted and graded until it's narrowed down to only around 30 items or so to be awarded.

 photo australian-grand-dairy-awards-0681_zpsxwz8n1ji.jpg

We were treated to a fabulous evening, where we started with the milk category, moved to the spreadable, got greedy with the soft cheese, even greedier with the hard cheese and then dairy-coma-ed hard on the gelato, yoghurt and ice-cream.

It was a good night.

The Grand Dairy Award for milk, flavoured dairy drink and speciality white dairy drink went to Harvey Fresh’s Free Range Full Cream Milk, Norco’s Real Iced Chocolate Ultimate and Pauls Smarter White Milk respectively.

We were treated to a delectable dessert centered aroud Harvey Fresh’s Free Range Full Cream Milk made by Chef Jake Kellie; now at the helm of new restaurant The Lakeside Mill in Pakenham. The milk foam was to die for and so delicate and sweet with the blackberries and honeycomb.

Perfect bite size tarts were the best way to feature the award winning butter, Western Star’s Original Butter, fresh unripened these, Floridia’s Ricotta, and dairy dip, Paradise Beach Purveyors Smoked Trout & Cheese.

Although we all love milk and butter, eyes definitely started to sparkle when cheese started coming out. We saw Meredith’s Fresh Goat Cheese sandwiched into beetroot macarons, Green Valley Dairy’s Yoghurt Cheese Balls in Oil with Chilli and Unicorn’s Flinders Estate Ash Brief (which was interestingly served on some damper).

The hard and blue cheese’s are what really win me over though! I sorely wanted to steal the Heidi Farm Gruyere and motioned to our host and MC Alice in Frames multiple times that I actually was going to take all the King Island Dairy Blue Triple Cream with me. The King Island Dairy Stormy Washed Rind Cheese and South Cape’s Parmesan also washed down with their paired drinks beautifully.

Dessert was a full table of Willy Wonka goodness. I couldn’t resist getting right into the Dooleys Premium Chocolate Ice Cream and covering it in all the popcorn brownies and caramel goodies. Cow and the Moon’s panacea with strawberry and balsamic ripple gelato was also magical…it’s just a shame it’s only in Sydney (…for now guys?)! Ruby Roy’s Authentic Greek Yoghurt Divine also took home a grand dairy award.

The big winners of the night though, were the Heidi Farm Gruyere (one of my favourite cheeses of the night) which won the Grand Champion Cheese award and Bulla’s Creme Fraiche, taking home the Grand Champion Dairy Product award as well.

What I really loved about all these products though, is that although they are the best in their field, I loved how accessibly (most) of them are. I’m sure many of these cheese can be found in our supermarket fridges, or at the local boutique supermarket.

…which spells trouble for my waistline, and means I’ll probably be indulging in plenty of cheese dreams in the near future. But hey, in this life, there are no regrets!

Uncommon.

Whilst it used to be the swish bars and night clubs where the young and beautiful mingled, where you went to be seen, I would now challenge that has changed to cafes.

More beautiful, more cutting edge and more design oriented than ever, with clever, often health driven menus, to seduce long legged, effortless, wide eyed beauties and just-so-cool guys complete with the kicks of the moment.

 photo uncommon-9919_zps22rlyjjs.jpg

Uncommon. in Windsor definitely pulls the crowd with it’s gorgeously monotone fitout, with some of the most beautiful sightlines I have seen recently, a mix of materials and textures and hanging greenery adding a pop of freshness. Throw in a couple of racks and it could be more of a fashion boutique than cafe!

Despite the beautiful people, service is perky and cheery; I meet yet another tattooed Pokemon fan who geeks out with my over my Pikachu iPhone cover, as well as prompt and attentive.

 photo uncommon-9892_zpschbfs8ba.jpg

 photo uncommon-9897_zpsslytfljx.jpg

Drinks are served on little metal trays, which I feel like I should roll my eyes at but that I actually really love. My chai is lovely, not so spicy, but a nice strong tea flavour that I finish far more quickly than I really should.

 photo uncommon-9904_zpsm1saziwt.jpg

Brad’s toasted buckwheat roll with poached chicken, grilled ham, fresh spinach, Emmental these, avocado and yuzu aioli looked modest, but was heavy in goodness. He wasn’t super hungry this particular morning, so this was just the right serve for him, with plenty of bright and fresh flavour.

 photo uncommon-9914_zpsbbktwk5k.jpg

 photo uncommon-9916_zpsvpcwogjy.jpg

I on the other hand, got the salad of buckwheat, roasted cauliflower, cucumber, kale, chilli and tatmari seeds with a tahini yoghurt dressing. I love going out for salads like these, which I would probably never come up with on my own at home (as I’m absolutely terrible at making salads as I have no creativity for vegetables), which taste delicious and feel good to eat as well. There was crunch, creaminess, freshness and richness all in the dish. The fried egg on top was just perfect with it’s runny egg yolk middle. Mmhmm.

 photo uncommon-9923_zpsteya3vhu.jpg

I kind of hate that Uncommon. is so popular at the moment, because I want to go back more, so I can eat all of the things on the menu cause it just all sounds so good, yet also healthy as well. Sweet potato and brown rice cakes, to flaxseed pikelets; sure it’s another cafe in Melbourne, but the offering is certainly anything but common.

Spencers Store

Although Brad and his family are the ones who live in Gembrook, which is kind of country I guess, an hour out of town, I’m probably the one out of the two of us who actually likes being in the country. Definitely wouldn’t like the amount of driving he does though, fortunately he’s okay with it!

Having ridden horses for many years, Brad’s mum keeps several horses and I love visiting them. Over Christmas and New Year, two of them gave birth to the most gorgeous foals, and fortunately I have had plenty of reasons to pop up and visit them.

 photo spencers-store-9782_zpssvl0kgry.jpg

The only problem when we go up for the weekend is that the brunch options are pretty slim, but it’s nice to see more and more places quietly pop up.

 photo spencers-store-9814_zpsacvg9cug.jpg

Spencer’s Store opened up in Gembrook late last year (I think), and after hearing great reviews from Brad’s family, I couldn’t wait to visit.

 photo spencers-store-9776_zps5untzh97.jpg

Literally just a 3 minute drive from Brad’s place, Spencers Store is totally adorable. It feels like stepping into someone’s house, a spacious one at that, with plenty of lovely natural wood, a cute retail corner with all the Robert Gordon things that I struggled very hard not to buy, and plenty of smiles.

I am also totally down with anyone recognising the Pikachu’s on my iPhone cover and geeking out with me over Pokemon and showing me their Pokemon tattoos. Just saying.

 photo spencers-store-9781_zpsjod7vbs1.jpg

My soy chai from Spencers Store was simply awesome. Far exceeded any expectations I could have had (and how cute is it in it’s little glass bottle?) Gorgeously aromatic, spicy, creamy and plenty of it! I think I’ve been disappointed with so many chai’s lately, because this is all I really want all the time!

 photo spencers-store-9789_zpslpto4ahq.jpg

 photo spencers-store-9808_zps29nust6t.jpg

The menu looked homely, but hearty and comforting. And that’s exactly what Brad’s baked beans, with ooey gooey poached eggs on toast was.

 photo spencers-store-9794_zpsrczirmgz.jpg

 photo spencers-store-9801_zpsvsn4yvew.jpg

I also totally loved my open burrito with sweet potato, beans and chickpeas. Although it looked a lot smaller than Brad’s beans, I was amazed with how full I was by the end! I loved how clean and fresh tasting it was, well garnished too, it’s the type of food I want to eat all the time (and I would, I adore chickpeas and sweet potato).

With incredibly friendly service, a relaxed and easy going ambiance and hearty meals, I can’t wait to be back. Between Spencers Store and the very quickly growing up foals, I certainly have a lot of reasons to be making it up to Gembrook for the weekend!
