Il Dolce Freddo

I first learned about this gelato place a few years back, when it was tipped off to my parents that if they called up and pre-ordered, they could get litre containers of durian gelato.

Personally? Ew. Although if you do float that way, it's supposed to be some of the best durian gelato you can get.

However, Il Dolce Freddo do have some other great flavours and just great gelato in general.

Gelato was so popular on the day we were strolling around Lygon Street, with streams of people lining out the door and squishing in, googly eyed in front of the gelato display. I love how gelato places always have their containers of ice-cream generously filled, small mounds of creamy goodness.

With easily about two dozen options, it gets very hard to narrow down exactly what to try. I'm personally partial to creamier, richer flavours and love to try something new. Especially if it has chocolate in it.

For this reason, I could not go by the snickers flavour and while I do like new things, you don't get pandan and coconut everywhere and it is absolutely excellent here.

Unlike my somewhat disappointing visit to Passionflower, the pandan and coconut flavour at Il Dolce Freddo is incredibly fragrant and each bite is rich and just delicious, the flavour doesn't wane or become bland.

Same goes for snickers, it's oddly got a bit of a crunch in it and I know my snicker bars don't have any wafers in them, but it was a nice little contrast and you couldn't definitely taste the caramel in there. Although I wouldn't have minded more of a peanut taste in there. Still, even as the gelato melted away I was eagerly lapping up the gelato soup that formed.

There's a reason why Lygon is so well known for it's gelato and maybe why the city doesn't have as much ice-cream as I'd like it to. The competition of Lygon street is just too fierce.

It's just so damn good.

  1. Ohh I've been bugging my boyfriend to take me here for ages. I've also heard the Durian flavour here is the best, although like you, I don't sway that way! Yummy, pandan...

  2. I love going to this place for gelati too. Oh and I have tried the durian one, and it was indeed excellent... but I guess you do have to like durian to appreciate it. :D

  4. Best. Gelati. Ever.

And the flavours actually taste like the real thing (c.f. Passion-effking-flower).

  5. These guys do the best Asian-flavoured ice-cream in Melbourne (that I've taste tested so far)...except the black sesame icecream prize is still taken by Goshen, the Korean resto on Smith St.
